Scaling Node.js Microservices: Lessons from Production
Building microservices at scale requires more than just splitting a monolith. In this article, I share practical lessons learned from architecting a platform that handles over 1 million daily requests.
The Challenge
When our monolithic application started hitting performance bottlenecks at 50K concurrent users, we knew it was time for a architectural shift. But microservices come with their own complexity.
Key Decisions
We chose an event-driven architecture with Redis pub/sub for inter-service communication. This decision alone reduced our average response time by 40%.
Lessons Learned
- Start with clear service boundaries based on business domains
- Invest in observability from day one
- Don't underestimate the complexity of distributed transactions
- Circuit breakers are not optional
The migration took 6 months, but the results speak for themselves: 99.95% uptime and 3x development velocity.
